This Cloudy Weather Will Not Stand, Man!

It may seem like just yesterday (literally)….that summer finally arrived in Seattle. This great weather is the perfect reason to catch an outdoor movie in Fremont FINALLY!.

However, this is your last week to do so in Fremont with the last show of the season upon us. We saved the best for last with a special 21 + screening event of “The Big Lebowksi” with two bars and mobile food trucks in the name of charity for a great local non-profit, Lumana.

We are pleased to announce a new community partner, WEST OF LENIN to theatre to quirky artistic neighborhood with an official “what-have-you” greeting by hundreds of people dressed up in costume, celebrating The Big Lebowski in Fremont at The Dude Fest.

In honor of the this great film, West of Lenin Theatre will premiere a new short film by Webster Crowell series titled “Rocketmen”.

West of Lenin is a project of AJ Epstein and his production company The Ethereal Mutt, West of Lenin is an 88 seat black box theatre and studio space located literally a 5 minute walk west of the Lenin statue in Fremont.

We exist to offer a venue for Seattle’s most interesting and adventurous artists, as well as the re-establishment of a permanent, live performance venue in Fremont.

In the spirit of the his royal Dudeness! The Fremont Outdoor Movies has taken it upon themselves to bring back Walter and the gang to Fremont.

Two years ago, we teamed up with Lebowski Fest “Speed of Sound” Tour that brought fourth one of the biggest shows on the tour with the original Dude himself, Jeff “The Real Dude” Dowd at Fremont Studios. This year, we create Seattle’s newest Dude ritual.

Join Lumana and the Fremont Outdoor Cinemas for a 21 + screening of the Big Lebowski complete with a White Russian bar and live music, a portion of all proceeds from the event will go towards benefiting Lumana’s programs helping women start businesses in Ghana, West Africa.

To celebrate the end of the summer and Lebowski with your fellow dudes and dudettes. All abiding will be done together while toasting the last days of sun with White Russians in hand.

Jason Quick The Juggling Act of Life
As a professional one-armed juggler and inspirational speaker, I strive to make every show about an important aspect of being human in relationship with other humans. I am a juggling geek, a relationship geek, and a circus freak who loves to juxtapose the tragic with the comic in order to bring the audience to a new balance within the dialectics that define our lives: comfort and pain, self and community, task and maintenance, love and fear…I will make of these five minutes something you will never forget.

Bennett Haselton Circumventing Internet censorship around the world
My full-time job is working on software to help people in get around Internet censorship in countries like China and Iran, where the government filters what people can access on the Web. I can talk about the history of methods used by repressive government to censor the Web, and the parallel history of the tools for users to defeat that censorship. I will address some of the misconceptions that people have about the nature of circumvention software and the battle between the censors and the circumventors. And finally I will pose some of the (as-yet-unsolved) problems faced by the developers of circumvention software — problems that perhaps the geeks in the audience would enjoy taking home and thinking over.

Amber Straub (shadalicious) Unparenting – tips from a geeky mom.
Now that many of my geek friends are having children (I had mine in my early twenties, somewhat “early”) I want to share some shortcuts and musings that my partner and I have discovered on the way.

I will talk about some parenting rules that have been passed down that can reevaluated and rethought. Are bedtimes really necessary? Our daughter has never had an enforced bedtime, and yet she arrives to school on time every day. It’s ok to rethink and reevaluate how we raise children; it’s ok to try new things.

I will present some signs of being a crazy helicopter parent (not a good thing). Kids *can* be left alone. Kids *can* fly unaccompanied. Kids *can* walk to school alone.

I will point out how we are fostering curiosity and creativity, and how we are teaching personal responsibility, common sense, and early independence. How do we deal with consequences for actions, present rewards and handle necessary chores.

I will show some ways that she gets the attention and care that she does need and want, and how she is thriving with the freedoms afforded to her.

And for those who don’t have kids, I will ensure that the talk applies to those who have kids in their lives. Kids want to be related to as peers, not as “little snotty things that talk”.

Almost all of the medical advances we enjoy today were first tested in mice. Most what we know about human physiology was first studied in mice. However, the general public’s understanding of lab mice is usually limited to a few characteristics – they’re white, and they’re probably trying to take over the world.

In truth, all mice are not created equal (many of them aren’t even white!). Over the past century an entire industry has developed that is devoted entirely to the creation and production of lab mice. My talk will cover the factors that make some mice more useful than others, and the mouse-industrial complex that exists to meet the needs of modern science.

Letterpress printing was a dying art in the 1980s and nearly dead in the 1990s. Technology has revived it. Letterpress is messy, each print is unique, and it’s the antidote and complement to the perfection-with-abstraction of the Web, ebooks, and the rest. People crave real connection that the screen doesn’t provide. Letterpress puts you right up to the metal and pushes.

Beverly Sobelman (bev_sobelman) How to Run Away and Join the Circus
Mid-life career changes are all the rage these days. I went from software engineer to circus artist OVERNIGHT! Except.. I didn’t. I took a bunch of steps that happened to lead away from software and into a career as an aerialist. This talk will walk you through the steps that I took, in hopes that my story might inspire a few others to try something new and different – whether it leads to a new career or simply a great story to tell your grandkids.

Shawn Murphy (shawnmur) Naked Safety or How To Secure a Parade With Simple Psychology
Large events like parades, conventions, and conferences often require large private security forces to maintain order and security. In a post 9/11 world, we’re told that this is required for our safety. It’s possible to control large crowds, effectively and safely, by applying modern psychology instead of barricades.

The Fremont Solstice Parade draws tens of thousands of spectators, but the parade is secured with fewer than 25, unpaid, volunteers with no security background and less than 20 minutes of training.

Security is often a boring subject, but keeping the Fremont Solstice Parade secure, safe, and (barely) a good show are the essence of hacking and good geekery — it’s also surprisingly funny.

Crowd sourcing has always been around but with the current technologies, its capabilities have grown tremendously. This presentation will focus on the use of these tools in an environment vastly growing by the number catastrophic events around the world. The month of September is National Preparedness Month and with that CrisisCommons, a volunteer technical community that connects people and organizations who use open data and technology to innovate crisis management and global development, will be going on a road trip. (ROAD TRIP!!!)

As the head of Cranium’s editorial department for 8+ years, I got hooked on Dr. Howard Gardner’s multiple intelligence theory, and I still find it to be a uniquely powerful tool for inspiration and general perspective-broadening. And in the current educational climate, when just about everything revolves around reading and math scores, I also think it’s incredibly important for the kids (and grown-ups!) in the crowd to hear these messages:

There are lots of ways (beyond just “reading” and “match”) to be smart!
We’re naturally inclined toward some of the intelligences, but we can improve and develop in any of them.
If something seems tedious or difficult to you, you can use the multiple intelligences to change your perspective.

We’re talking Hoop Dancing – a style of Advanced Hula Hooping that your parents NEVER did!

Amanda (aka Sirin) will talk of the hooping sub-culture and how this modern take on an old fitness craze has taken a very new and different look. It’s become such an addiction to some that they’ve built careers out of hooping, branched off the sub-culture into sub-sub-cultures such as fire hooping, hoop yoga, hoop aerobics and hoop dancing.

These silly circular kids toys are inspiration to people who are looking to get fit, have fun and it CANNOT be done without a smile!

Amanda will also do some LED hooping (yes, this hoop has LIGHTS, people!) and give all the details to anyone who is looking for more info on getting started or who just wants to see what crazy folks are coming up with to spend your free time.

Jen Matson (nstop) Field Guide to Record Collectors

While everyone (of a certain age) remembers the first record they bought as a kid, only a small number of us end up loving the spinning slab of vinyl as much as the music itself.

Drawing on my own experience both as a longtime music geek and onetime used record store clerk, I’d like to present a High Fidelity-style Top Five List covering the most common habits and characteristics of that odd breed known as the record collector. Through a few profiles of collectors I have known and loved, I’ll cover such mysteries as:

- Why people own multiple copies of what appear to be the same record
- What is the proper record fair etiquette
- The sanctity of the first pressing

Even the most physical-format-shunning music fan should come away from my talk with a newfound understanding of (if not appreciation for) why we vinyl enthusiasts continue to lug our heavy boxes and crates of LPs and 45s around with us from place to place.

It has come to our attention that this Saturday, audiences have the opportunity to pick between a free screening at the Seattle Center Mural Ampitheater or pay $5 to see it at the Fremont Outdoor Movies this weekend. While we are surprised to find out that the competition on the same night (considering our summer program is announced in May every year). Our concern is the possible opportunity lost for the non-profit charity fundraiser tonight.

This weekend we are showing a family classic, The Princess Bride. Come out for one of the most fun nights of the season, featuring Wing It Production’s Doug Willot hosting trivia, and playing games with the audience where you can win all sorts of prizes.

Mission Statement: Our mission is to provide athletic entertainment that improves our member’s individual athletic ability, self-discipline, and character while promoting the roller derby sport. Our program provides intense training, instruction, and competition, which prepares our members to represent Seattle at regional, national, and international competition. The season wouldn’t be complete without a screening of the “The Big Lebowski” in Fremont. The Dude Fest kicks off a new northwest celebration for all things related to the 1998 Coen brothers cult comedy, “The Big Lebowski.”

This year, we are helping support a wonderful local charity Lumana . 100% of the entire beer garden and White Russian Bar sales go the organization. A portion of the ticket proceeds go to support Lumana.

Mission

To alleviate poverty in rural communities through education and entrepreneurship.

Vision

Our vision is to create healthy communities across Africa. We do that first by creating a baseline of financial self-sufficiency through our microfinance and Business Management Education program. We encourage community building and entrepreneurship, and leadership throughout the village. Through our on-the-ground partnerships, efforts, and surveys, we recognize the essential products or programs that will increase the amount of healthy communities across Africa.

Two years ago, the Fremont Outdoor Movies teamed up with the gang from Lebowski Fest to welcome the return of the 2009 “SPEED OF SOUND” tours return to Seattle hosted at Fremont Studios. It was an amazing event and Seattle was proud to welcome back a great annual movie tradition.

After Fremont organizers heard that it wouldn’t return in 2011 to Seattle, they decided to take matter into their own hands and create their own tribute event that allows fans of all ages to come together for an evening to share in the fun and “what-have-you’s”.

This is our first year and shares in the same celebration as Lebowski Fest, which we love to raise a little hell and raise awareness for a great charity organization with a special tribute to Jeff Bridges this year. Stay tuned for more details.

David Warner plays all three main antagonists: the program Sark, his “User”, Ed Dillinger, and the voice of the artificially intelligent Master Control Program. The film tells the story of Flynn as he attempts to hack into the ENCOM mainframe to prove that Dillinger has appropriated his work, but ends up being transported into the Digital World itself as a unique program/User. Alex, a teenager living in near-future England, leads his gang on nightly orgies of opportunistic, random “ultra-violence.” Alex’s friends (”droogs” in the novel’s Anglo-Russian slang,Nadsat) are Dim, a slow-witted bruiser who is the gang’s muscle; Georgie, an ambitious second-in-command; and Pete, who mostly plays along as the droogs indulge their taste for ultra-violence. Alex is characterized as a sociopath and a hardened juvenile delinquent; he is nonetheless intelligent and quick-witted, with sophisticated taste in music. He is particularly fond of Beethoven, or “Lovely Ludwig Van.”

The novel begins with the droogs sitting in their favourite hangout, drinking milk-drug cocktails, called “milk-plus”, to hype themselves for the night’s mayhem. They assault a scholar walking home from the library, stomp a panhandling derelict, scuffle with a rival gang, then rob a newsstand and leave its owners bloodied and unconscious. Joyriding through the countryside in a stolen car, they break into an isolated cottage and maul the young couple living there, beating the husband and raping his wife. In a metafictional touch, the husband is a writer working on a manuscript called “A Clockwork Orange,” and Alex contemptuously reads out a paragraph that states the novel’s main theme before shredding the manuscript. Back at the milk bar, Alex punishes Dim for some crude behaviour, and strains within the gang become apparent. At home in his dreary flat, Alex plays classical music at top volume while fantasizing of even more orgiastic violence.

Alex skips school the next day. Following an unexpected visit from P.R. Deltoid, his “post-corrective advisor,” Alex meets a pair of underage girls and takes them back to his parents’ flat, where he administers them hard drugs and then rapes them. That evening, Alex finds his droogs in a mutinous mood. Georgie challenges Alex for leadership of the gang, demanding that they pull a “man-sized” job. Alex quells the rebellion by slashing Dim’s hand and fighting with Georgie, then in a show of generosity takes them to a bar, where Alex insists on following through on Georgie’s idea to burgle the home of a wealthy old woman. The break-in starts as farce and ends in murder as Alex kills the elderly woman. His escape is blocked by Dim, who leaves him disabled on the front step as the police arrive.

The film is an enactment of the following story read by a sick boy’s grandfather (Falk) as the boy (Savage) sits in bed listening, framed and occasionally interrupted by scenes of the reading.

A beautiful young woman named Buttercup (Robin Wright) lives on a farm in the fictional country of Florin. Whenever she gives her farmhand Westley (Cary Elwes) an order, he answers “As you wish.” and happily complies. Eventually she realizes he loves her and admits her love for him. Westley leaves to seek his fortune so they can marry, but his ship is attacked by the Dread Pirate Roberts.

Five years later, believing Westley dead, Buttercup reluctantly agrees to marry Prince Humperdinck (Chris Sarandon), heir to the throne of Florin. This Fourth of July weekend, thousands of Seattle’s undead return to feed on brains and representing their Emerald City by shuffling their back into the history books to reclaim the Guinness World Record for “Largest Gathering of Zombies.” New Jersey currently holds the official record with 4,093 Zombies set back in October 2010. So get your costumes out, get ready to sport that fake blood and grab a few friends for this unique block party located in the “Dead Center of the Universe” for this huge costumed affair.

This year, organizers of the Zombie walk are offering a few new options to discourage Zombies to eat bystanders and chomp on mobile food and satisfy their thirst with two beer gardens and a live music concert to Seattle’s biggest 4th of July party to add to the already unique display of undead festivities. So why beer gardens, when Zombies just want to walk in search of brains?

This year, Zombies can shamble, dance and drink their way into the history books for an amazing charity that can raise up to $10,000 for the organizers of the beloved Fremont Solstice Parade that takes place at the Fremont Fair by the Fremont Arts Council annually, among other great programs.

Seattle to Celebrate Holy Rapture with World’s Largest Zombie Walk on Fourth of July Weekend

[May 19th. 2011] Citizens of Seattle have taken matters into their own hands deciding to celebrate the recent news of the holy rapture and apocalypse due to begin in May with a massive Zombie Walk and Charity Rock concert on Saturday, July 2nd at the 3rd annual Red, White and Dead Zombie Block Party for this once-in-a-lifetime event.

This Fourth of July weekend, thousands of Seattle’s undead return to feed on undead cosplay and represent the Emerald City by shuffling their back into the history books to reclaim the Guinness World Record for “Largest Gathering of Zombies.” New Jersey currently holds the official record with 4,093 Zombies set back in October 2010.

This year, the Red, White and Dead Zombie Block party returns with the ever-popular Thriller Flash Mob and Fashionably Undead Costume Contest. 2011 also introduces a a new set of activities from a live music concert series, mobile food challenge and massive beer gardens for a local non-profit charity, Reel Grrls. Event Producer Ryan Reiter, “This is popular fan culture at it’s best, it’s the ultimate kodak moment celebrating the ever-popular, Zombie that helps raise money and awareness for local charities happening right here in Seattle annually.

Known by researchers and many as the “populis fanatic culturis” (otherwise known as popular fan culture) virus; this one-day infection has occurred in Seattle the past two Fourth of July weekends; attributed by thousands of moaning, shambling, and dancing Zombies lurking around the artistic community of Fremont for a huge charity event. Symptoms are often include fun, laughter and highly contagious for people of all ages.
